Droitwich business AKW has invited two local schools to join them in their support for a Midlands para-cycling athlete as he heads for the 2012 London Paralympic Games.  Regency High  and Chadsgrove Primary specialist schools have been set the exciting challenge of designing a special mascot that Jon-Allan Butterworth can take with him in his quest for Olympic gold.

AKW is the market leader in independent living solutions and have agreed a partnership with Jon-Allan, who is helping the company spread its message of the importance of independence for anyone living with a disability.  As well as  raising disability awareness, particularly amongst young people, AKW will be promoting Jon-Allan’s Paralympic campaign.  As part of this, the company is inviting the two local schools to compete to design an exclusive mascot, which will then be professionally produced to go with him to London.  The winning pupil will receive their own replica of the mascot.

Having joined the RAF in 2002, Jon-Allan served as a weapons technician in Afghanistan and Iraq. A rocket attack on Basra Air Station in Iraq in 2007 meant he was forced to undergo an above-elbow amputation on his left arm. The athlete has only been cycling professionally since 2009 but has already amassed a number of high profile achievements, with career highlights to date including a British record in the 4km Individual Pursuit and a World record in the 1km Time Trial.  The accomplished paracyclist is on course to compete in the 1km Time Trial and 4km Individual Pursuit at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Paul Massey, Chief Executive of AKW, said:  “It is a real pleasure working with someone who has shown such determination to get to the top of his chosen sport in such a short time and we would really like our local community to join with us in supporting Jon-Allan’s Paralympic campaign.  This is a fantastic opportunity for a local youngster to see their creative work going to one of our greatest sporting events and perhaps even appear on an Olympic podium!”

The pupils’ designs for the mascot can take any shape or form, giving their imagination free rein.  The winning design will be chosen in mid February.
