AKW Volunteer at Age UK Dementia Day Centres

As part of the AKW Helping Hands Volunteering Scheme which enables colleagues to get involved with local charities and good causes as part of their employment, four members of the AKW team visited two Age UK Dementia Day Centres in June.

Business Development Managers Carl Burns and Adam Broomhead, Engineer Dave Hallworth, and Regional Sales Director Bob Dickie visited centres in Doncaster and Gateshead that offer specialised day break services for people living with dementia, which also give carers an opportunity for respite.

Volunteers spent their working days with clients taking part in activities designed to be stimulating for the brain within a relaxed environment, these included sports such as pool, jigsaw puzzles, arts and crafts.

They also assisted centre carers with preparing and serving snacks and drinks. They provided companionship by sitting and chatting with clients, giving them a chance to learn more about their lives and experiences.

The AKW volunteers thoroughly enjoyed their time with the Age UK team and the centre’s clients, with Bob Dickie saying: “It was a privilege to be part of the staff at Age UK for a day…this day centre is giving clients a new lease of life, and it’s all down to the hard-working staff who are amazing”.
