AKW Volunteer to Paint Petty Pool Green!

- Written by Connor

On Wednesday 21st June, team members from our Cheshire office took part in their first volunteering project as part of AKW Helping Hands, a scheme introduced at the end of 2022 which encourages and enables staff to get involved in charitable initiatives as part of their employment with AKW.

The team, consisting of 7 employees from across Marketing, Accounts, Production, Sales, and Surveying visited Petty Pool Vocational College & Outdoor Centre, which is nestled in 40 acres of ancient woodland in Sandiway.

As a specialist education provider for young people with learning disabilities and difficulties, Petty Pool supports over 113 full-time learners through leisure, vocational and community activities, with 99.4% obtaining a vocational qualification, and all leaving with a positive destination – 22% of which gain paid employment (16% above the national average).

The volunteers’ trip to Petty Pool began with a tour of the facilities and introductions to some of the students. The team then assisted students with building bird houses, as well as painting fences and sheds to help the on-site maintenance team, who balance maintaining the College grounds while also teaching students valuable labour skills.

The AKW team thoroughly enjoyed the day and were grateful to be well taken care of by everyone at Petty Pool, with a delicious lunch provided by their talented catering students. So much fun was had that the AKW team is already asking to return and help with future projects, which is exactly why AKW Helping Hands was introduced – to support our teams with giving back and connecting with our local community.
