What is a Doc M Bathroom?

- Written by Ash Bath

Doc M is short for Approved Document M, a key part of Building Regulations in England which ensures that people are able to access and use buildings and their facilities – including toilets.

A Doc M pack is a collection of products designed for installation in an accessible bathroom intended for public use, which complies with the guidance set out in Approved Document M.

There are a wide variety of Doc M packs available, from cubicles to fully-compliant solutions, which ensure providers can install products that are suitable for the different people visiting their building or facility.

There are many features of a Doc M bathroom, these include:

  • Raised-height toilet pans which make it easier for people to lower/raise from the seat and complete safe side transfers from wheelchairs
  • One-tap hole wash basins which should be positioned close to the toilet to enable people to wash their hands while seated
  • TMV3 thermostatic mixer taps which regulate the temperature to prevent people being scalded
  • Shelves installed close to the toilet for people using digestive waste aids, such as ostomy bags
  • Grab rails installed in specific locations throughout the space to ensure people can safely move around and use the bathroom with as much ease and support as possible

AKW supply ten Doc M packs which have been designed to offer a variety of accessible toileting solutions, this includes products ideal for use in a Doc M bathroom, such as raised-height sanitaryware, grab rails, shelving and taps. We also stock a wide range of Doc M accessories, such as alarm cords, clothes hooks, soap dispensers and hand dryers.
